T he aim of education should be to make one self-reliant. At Western Community College, education is imparted to the students with this aim. Every organization needs qualified and skilled employees and every employee needs a job that is as per their skill set. What bridges this gap is a qualification that provides the required skill set to the potential employees. All the courses offered at Western Community College help the students to acquire those skills that are considered to be most important in that field.

Western Community College began its operations in 2012. In the beginning, the college only offered one program to the students, that was, Health Care Assistant Program. Gradually, the college has expanded, now offering 14 programs, broadly divided in the field of Health Care, Accounting, Business Management, and Medical Office Administration. Recently, Western Community College got accredited with PCTIA and got the Educational Quality Assurance Designation by the Ministry of Advanced Education. Besides this, Western Community College is also on the Designated Learning Institutions List (DLI List) of Canada Immigration, due to which the college can host international students. Western Community College also has the BC Student Loan Designation, because of this our students can apply for BC Student Loans and grants.

HCA Program is a 778 hour full time program that is registered with the BC Care Aide Registry and is offered in weekday or weekend format. Health Care Assistants help in the basic care of patients and senior citizens under the direction of nurses, hospital staff and physicians. They provide professional care to the people in need of complex care. HCAs work in a variety of settings, including hospitals, long term care facilities, group homes, home support and community care. They also have the opportunity to work part time or on call. The hourly wage rate ranges in this profession from $16- $26 per hour, based on the experience of the employee.

Accounting programs at WCC range from Bookkeeping and Accounting (6 month program) to Diploma in Accounting for 1 year and Diploma in Advanced Accounting (2 years). Bookkeeping and Accounting are evergreen fields, where skilled people are always in demand. Every small or large company has a financial practice, as such a number of job opportunities are available to these students.

Medical Office Assistants: A Medical Office Assistant is an important part of a health care team. They are in charge of keeping the medical office running smoothly. Medical office assistants can work in doctors’ offices, hospitals, medical clinics, pharmaceutical companies, government health agencies and a various other medical settings. An MOA creates office efficiencies that enable medical professionals to see more patients. As the population ages, healthcare jobs such as this one will continue to increase in the years to come.MOA is a 6 month program at Western Community College, which prepares you to take on all the responsibilities as a Medical Office Assistant.

The college also offers three add on courses for the Health Care Professionals, namely Medication Management, Dementia Care and Palliative Care. For the students who are preparing for the IELTS exam, the college provides an intensive preparatory course. The Live In Caregiver program, commonly known as the Nanny course, is also a short duration program after which the students can work with a Canadian family as a Nanny or Caregiver. Internationally educated nurses and health professionals can do a short duration program – HCA Introduction to Practice and register as Care Aides in BC.

Western Community College has strong qualified instructors. The computer and medical lab are equipped with the latest instruments and software. With the focus on individualized education, the numbers of students in a class are limited, so that perfect instructor student ratio can be maintained.
