When a baby is coming, it’s not only the expectant parents who are filled to the brim with joy and excitement about the new addition to the family. Grandparents are sometimes almost as anxious about an impending birth as the parents are, and when that new baby comes, the grandparents are often standing right behind the happy mom and dad, smiling and cooing at the baby over the parents’ shoulders, ready to step in if needed.

It is mesmerizing to meet your child’s child.

You hold this tiny being and see your own child so many years ago. You feel the love of the years and struggles sweep by you in this little tiny face. The little eyes meet yours and you see something new, but so familiar too. It’s an overwhelming experience to see, hold and observe this tiny being who is part of you, but not you.

There is this new little life who is yours, but not your responsibility. This child is meant as pure enjoyment and love for you, with the work belonging to someone else. It’s a beautiful thing. There’s a saying that having children is like having your heart walking around outside of your body. I think grandchildren take a little bit of your soul too.
