18th annual Victor Ghirra toy drive honors a legacy of kindness this holiday season

The 18th annual Victor Ghirra toy drive is a beloved holiday tradition in the Lower Mainland, honoring the life of a man celebrated for his generous spirit. Launched in 2007 following Victor’s unexpected passing, the drive continues to reflect his commitment to helping those in need, particularly children. Victor Ghirra was known for his quiet philanthropy, having anonymously donated thousands of dollars’ worth of toys to BC Children’s Hospital over the years. Organizer Harvey Kooner recalls touching stories about Victor’s life, highlighting how he would simply say, “It doesn’t matter who I am; these toys are for the kids.” His selfless acts of kindness inspired the creation of this annual event, which has grown to support over 25 charities.

In its 17 years, the toy drive has collected and distributed more than 50,250 toys, spreading joy to countless children and families in need. This year, the community is invited to participate in a festive celebration on Sunday, December 15, from 12 PM to 2 PM at Riverside Palace Banquet Hall in Richmond. Attendees can bring new, unwrapped toys to support over 15 local charities, ensuring that Victor’s spirit of giving lives on. The toy drive relies heavily on the support of the community and its partners, including The Co-Operators Insurance, Riverside Banquet Halls, and Vancity Credit Union. Bobby Ghirra, Victor’s brother, emphasizes that even 18 years later, Victor’s impact remains profound, motivating others to give from the heart.
